Even in the times of bushidos they liked Bunraku and held wonderful chanoyu ceremonies right here in Nagoya.

As a young child, I lived a short distance from Heiwagaoka cemetery. I'm sorry to say we used to play in the cemetery, showing no reverence. I was ages 4 to 7. We were of only 4 or so American families living in a Japanese town. In the 50s, the streets were dirt. It was an idyllic place to grow up. I have no pictures of the cemetery, but remember on one side of the street, there were soldier statues marking each grave and a daruma in red in a cage. The other side of the street had large tombs with concrete stairs and living hedges and gravel atop them. I wish I could see pictures.

One-time visitor: The 埠 is not included in the Joyo Kanji (2136 regular use characters) so it is often just written as ふ. Many places opt to use hiragana if the kanji is not included in Joyo.

Right John. I too don't understand Barbara's comment on crime in Japan. Japan has the lowest crime rate of any industrialized nation in the world.

For anyone who Googled to find the kanji, it's 金城ふ頭 or 金城埠頭 (the reason I ended up on this page). I guess 埠 was too difficult for some people so they dropped it for hiragana?

I have visited Japan four times, once in 1978 then 2011, 2012, and am here now in 2013. I have never seen anything that Barbara Smith comments on. Where on earth were you woman? People smoke way too many cigarettes and drink too much booze, but illegal drugs in Japan? Never seen it, never heard of it.
