Nagoya

With 2.2 million people and approx. 8 million in the metro area Nagoya is one of Japan's
major cities. It is a major port and an automotive centre for the country, being the
world headquarters for Toyota. An unique city in its own right, it is well worth a visit
if one should visit Japan.

Even in the times of bushidos they liked Bunraku and held wonderful chanoyu ceremonies right here in Nagoya.

As a young child, I lived a short distance from Heiwagaoka cemetery. I'm sorry to say we used to play in the cemetery, showing no reverence. I was ages 4 to 7. We were of only 4 or so American families living in a Japanese town. In the 50s, the streets were dirt. It was an idyllic place to grow up. I have no pictures of the cemetery, but remember on one side of the street, there were soldier statues marking each grave and a daruma in red in a cage. The other side of the street had large tombs with concrete stairs and living hedges and gravel atop them. I wish I could see pictures.

One-time visitor: The 埠 is not included in the Joyo Kanji (2136 regular use characters) so it is often just written as ふ. Many places opt to use hiragana if the kanji is not included in Joyo.
